Grant, Charles seek NAIA individual titles
Wiley College women’s track and field athletes Kara Grant and Shaiann Charles hope to end up on the podium as they compete for individual national titles at the 2019 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Women’s Outdoor Track and Field National Championship at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium in Gulf Shores, Alabama Friday and Saturday.
Grant advanced with her time of 2:14.49 in the 800-meter run at Abilene Christian University’s Last Chance Meet on May 12. Her time ranks 18th in the NAIA and will need to finish in the top eight in Friday’s preliminaries at 2 p.m. The final will be at 4:50 p.m. on Saturday.
Grant won Red River Athletic Conference titles in the 800-meter run and 1,500-meter run. In her first season, she won Track Athlete of the Week three times.
Charles qualified with her Red River Athletic Conference championship winning distance of 42.93 meters. She is the first Lady Wildcat to qualify for nationals in the discus. Charles will throw at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Along with repeating her conference title, Charles won three Field Athlete of the Week awards.
Fridie competes for NAIA long jump title
Reshaun Fridie hopes to end his season with an individual national title when he competes in the long jump at the 2019 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Men’s Outdoor Track and Field National Championship at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
In the final meet of the season, Fridie jumped 7.14 meters to qualify. He enters the meet tied for 30th. The long jump competition is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Friday. The top eight marks will earn NAIA All-American.
In his first season, Fridie earned Red River Athletic Conference Field Athlete of the Week twice. He earned All-Conference in the long jump and triple jump at the 2019 Gloria D. Larry Red River Athletic Conference Track and Field Championship.
