Carthage vs Waco La Vega

Carthage’s Kai Horton launches a pass during the 2019 state championship game against La Vega in Arlington.

The more things change, the more they appear to stay the same.

It’s not that long ago that something from the University Interscholastic League could be written in stone, but COVID-19 has made the group with all the rules change its ways, too.

But when it came time to pick the top team in Class 4A Division II, there wasn’t much debate.

Your Carthage Bulldogs are favored to be the last team standing according to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football.

The Dawgs will be out for eight under the direction of Coach Scott Surratt.

After beating Waco La Vega for the 2019 Division I State Title, the Bulldogs are now moving down to Division II.

Pleasant Grove, which has lost to Carthage in the regular season the past two seasons, took the D-II title last year. The two teams will again meet in the regular season this year, with the Bulldogs favored and PG picked second in the state.

Carthage is in Region III and PG will be in Region II.

No. 3 in the state is West Orange Stark, with Wimberly No. 4 and Gilmer No. 5.

Celina is back in the picture at No. 6 and is followed by Sunnyvale in Region I. Silsbee is ranked eighth, Geronimo Navarro is No. 9 out of Region IV, and the Graham Steers are ranked 10th and representing Region I.
