LONGVIEW — Sophomore keeper Jacob Whatley was perfect in the goal, but his counterpart for the Pine Tree Pirates matched him as the teams opened the 2021 season with a 0-0 tie on Monday.

Whatley made 15 saves on 15 shots from the Pirates.

The Bulldogs are coming off a 9-8-6 season that saw them in fourth place in district when the coronavirus wiped out the rest of the school year.

Carthage beat Diboll 3-1 in an earlier scrimmage with Emanual De Le Cruz scoring two goals and Demarian Delaney scoring a single goal, off assists from Christian Lopez, Pedro Garcia and Whitton Malone. Whatley and Jonathan Medrano both had three saves in that match.

The Dawgs were originally supposed to scrimmage at Texas High in Texarkana, but that scrimmage was cancelled. Carthage will open this weekend’s Pittsburg Tournament against Texas High on Thursday before playing Gladewater and Mineola on Friday.
