Carthage vs. Crandall

Carthage’s Mason Courtney breaks through the line of scrimmage for a big gain during the game against Crandall in Tyler.

The UIL’s announcement last week pushing back the start of the fall sports season for Classes 6A and 5A sent football coaches from those classes, as well as 4A, scrambling to find games.

Not many had to find as many games as Carthage Head Coach Scott Surratt, who saw his first three games of the season go by the wayside.

It appears he was moderately successful when the schedule was re-released.

The defending state champion Bulldogs will now play a nine-game schedule with six road games, including four to start the season. They won’t play their first home game until Oct. 9 and the schedule now includes two open dates.

After a scrimmage against Liberty-Eylau on Aug. 20, they will open the season at Kilgore. This was originally supposed to be a scrimmage for both teams, but then the UIL decided to limit each school to just one.

Carthage is off the next week before traveling to Orange to play the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears in a 7 p.m. game. The Bears were 6-5 last season going two rounds in the playoffs, beating Stafford and falling to Crandall.

The Bulldogs get another bye week on Sept. 18, then play Gilmer and Pleasant Grove on consecutive weeks before finally coming home to play Center on Oct. 9 for its Homecoming game and its district opener.

They are then back on the road to face Jasper, come home to play Rusk and Madisonville and finish the regular season on the road at Shepherd.

The JV Bulldogs currently have an eight-game schedule, the freshmen play seven and the junior high teams play eight-game schedules.

The Bulldogs will pick up their equipment this week, with the seniors getting theirs on Wednesday from 9 to 11 a.m.; juniors on Thursday from 9 to 11 a.m.; sophomores on Thursday from 1 to 3 p.m.; and the freshmen on Friday from 9 to 11 a.m.

Practice begins on Monday.

The eighth grade boys will pick up their equipment from 8 a.m. to noon and the seventh graders go from 1 to 5 p.m. at Carthage Junior High School.
