It was a little closer than the first time, but the Panola College Ponies picked up their second win of the season over the Houston Gladiators, coming back from Christmas break with a 99-87 non-conference win Saturday in Arthur Johnson Gym.
The win improves the 15th-ranked Ponies to 12-2 for the season and opens up a week of workouts for the team as they get ready to start playing Region XIV games.
They play Lee College at home on Friday in a 7 p.m. conference game, then hit the road to play Blinn College in Brenham in a 7 p.m. game on Monday.
Wednesday is a 7 p.m. home game against Angelina College, and they are at Coastal Bend College for a 4 p.m. tipoff Saturday in Beeville
In Saturday’s game, the two teams were tied at the intermission, 43-43, but the Ponies pulled away from there, outscoring the visitors 56-55 the rest of the way.
The Ponies were led by Kelyn Pennie with 20 points. He was joined in double figures by Aaron Gedeon with 18 points and eight rebounds, Christopher Coley and Jermaine Drewey with 12 points each, Dominique Jackson with 11, and Cameron Carson with 10 off the bench. Stanton Rose had five assists to go along with four points.
The Panola College Fillies also will be returning to action this weekend after their break, although they’ll start with a 1 p.m. Thursday game at home against the Weatherford College Lady Kangaroos. They’ll play Thursday against Trinity Valley in Athens at 5:30 p.m. and close out the week with a 2 p.m. home game against Coastal Bend College.
