After already losing one day to rain, it appeared the championship game of the Dixie League 7U All-Star District Tournament was going to be pushed back again.
That’s because every time Panola County would score in the top of the inning, Bullard would match it or pass it in its half of the inning.
But Panola scored two in the top of the eighth and came up with some key defensive stops in the bottom of the inning to hold on for the 16-14 win at the PCBA Complex Monday night.
Panola County swept through the four-team bracket with a perfect record, beating Bullard 16-6 in the opener and Nacogdoches 9-7.
Bullard advanced to the title game by bouncing back with an 11-6 win over Henderson and a 9-7 win over Nacogdoches.
In the title game, Panola plated a single run in the first, only to see Bullard take a 2-1 lead.
Panola would score four in the third to go up 5-2, but Bullard went back on top 6-5 with a four-run inning of its own.
It looked like Panola might have a hand on things when it scored three in the fourth to go up 8-6 and then held Bullard scoreless.
A single run in the top of the fifth made it a 9-6 game.
But Bullard matched it sending the game into the top of the sixth tied at 9-9.
Panola took advantage of a couple Bullard errors to scre five times in top of the sixth and open up a 14-9 lead.
That lead looked like it was going to be safe enough as Panola got two quick outs, despite loading the bases. But an error let three runs score and a two-run single tie the game at 14-14.
Neither team scored in the seventh, but Panola pushed across two in the eighth to go up 16-14.
The defense came through for Panola in the eighth as they got three ground outs to finish the game.
