Kristen Stewart set up a Cami Hicks kill to put Carthage back on top, and Hicks finished off Bullard with a dink over the front line as the Lady Bulldogs swept the visitors 3-0 Tuesday night in Bulldog Gym.
Carthage beat the Lady Panthers 25-18, 25-21 and 26-24 to wins its season opener. They play in the Garland Tournament this weekend.
Although not able to put the visitors away early in the third set, the Lady Bulldogs held the lead most of the match until Bullard went up 21-20.
Despite a Carthage time out, the Lady Panthers opened up a 24-21 advantage.
But Hicks put one away, Stewart picked up two points while serving and the Lady Bulldogs scored the final five points of the match to get the sweep.
Hicks finished with 10 kills and three blocks while Stewart had 11 points, 15 assists, six digs, three kills and two aces.
Carthage breezed through the opening set, but the Lady Panthers came out strong in the second, grabbing a 4-0 lead and appeared to be in control until the home team finally tied it up at 13-13.
The Lady Bulldogs took their first lead at 15-14 and never trailed again, but the Lady Panthers made them work for every point.
“We are working on not letting one bad thing turn into several,” second-year coach Dawn Stewart said. “We want to make them earn everything. A lot of the things we’re doing are different. We want to get better with the ball.
“We did a great job of coming back. We can go on a scoring run with anyone serving.”
