The Carthage Lady Bulldogs were in control from the start Tuesday night as they crushed visiting Huntington for their 16th straight win.

The No. 5 Lady Bulldogs won 25-12, 25-7, 25-17 to improve to 31-4 for the season and a perfect 3-0 in District 20-4A.

“It was a good team win,” said coach Dawn Stewart. “We lost Coach Mac (Dennis McLaughlin) and the girls played this one for him. They wore pink tape on their shoes.

“We’re finding our grove. I put some different rotations out there and they all responded well.”

For the second time in district play the Lady Bulldogs almost posted a shutout in the second set.

After winning the first point, the team rolled off eight straight points with Kristen Stewart picking up several of her game-high seven aces.

The Devilettes (2-20, 0-1) broke the streak by winning a point, but Carthage ran off 10 more to go up 19-1 before finishing out the set strong.

Huntington did stay with the Lady Bulldogs early in the third set, but they eventually pulled away.

Stewart had 15 assists, six kills and four digs to go with her aces, while McKenna Zett had seven kills and three aces; Cami Hicks had six kills, two blocks and three aces; Faith Kruebbe also had six kills and two blocks; and Jada McLin had five kills.

Makhai Lewis had three kills and five blocks; Caroline Baldree had four blocks; Sadie Smith had nine assists, five digs and three blocks; Chesney Baker had 15 digs; and Addi Surratt had 11 digs.

“Mikhai is starting to come out of her comfort zone and doing some good things,” the coach said. “Kristen is doing a good job setting the ball up, and Chesney and Addi are doing a good job on the back row getting it up to her. We’re having a lot of people step up and play good volleyball.

“We’re wanting to cut down on our unforced errors and make people earn every point they get. Our goal is to be the best we can be.”

The Lady Bulldogs will play at Longview on Friday at 4:30 p.m. in a non-district match.
