HUTCHINSON, Kansas — The Panola College Fillies got off to a strong start in the first round of the NJCAA National Volleyball Tournament Thursday, winning the first set.

They led midway through the second set as well.

But the Polk State Eagles stormed back to win the second set, pulled away late in the third and the whipped the Fillies in the fourth to take the 3-1 win at the Hutchinson Sports Center.

The loss was the second of the season at hands of the Eagles for the Fillies, who drop to 29-9 for the season.

The chance at a national title is over, but the tournament is not for Panola College as the Fillies will meet No. 4-seeded Snow State in the Consolation Bracket Friday at noon.

Polk State and 13th-seeded Northeastern played later Friday night, but results were not available.

The Fillies held a 5-4 lead in the first set when they started pulling away, using three attack errors and two service errors by the Eagles, as well as kills by Ashton Brown, Maria Idjilov and Riley Seegers to go up 12-5.

Kills by MiKayla Ware and Nyah Walker helped build the lead to eight, 14-6, and the Fillies still led by eight at 18-10.

However, the Eagles mounted a comeback, taking advantage of Panola errors and got as close as 24-23 before Mylene Testoni got the kill for the PC win.

Panola jumped out to leads of 4-1 and 8-3 in the second set, only to see the Eagles storm back.

Four kills and four PC errors helped Polk State go up 13-0 before the Fillies called time.

That slowed them down for a moment, but the Eagles came back to take leads of 17-11 and 23-15. The Eagles finished things off with a kill to tie the match.

The third set was back-and-forth with neither team going up by more than five points,.

There were eight ties and four lead changes with Polk State opening up a 20-15 lead. The Fillies took advantage of a service error, got a kill from Brown, an ace from Testoni and a bad set by the Eagles to cut the lead to 20-19.

Polk State held on for the win with two kills to finish off the third set.

The Fillies fell behind early in the fourth set and never led. The Eagles would build a lead of 10, 20-10, and never looked back.

Ware had a double-double to lead the Fillies with 13 kills and 16 digs, while Walker had 10 and six, respectively. Testoni had five kills, Idjilov had 29 assists, Hannah Floyd has 19 sigs and Erin Perez had 13.
