SHREVEPORT, La. — Simran Mayfield only made one shot Wednesday night in the Region XIV women’s quarterfinals in Centenary’s Gold Dome.
It came at just the right time for the Lady RoadRunners as she split a pair of Panola college defenders and made a driving layup with 6.3 seconds left to give No. 6 Angelina College a 52-50 upset win over the third-seeded Fillies.
While it may have been an upset going by the seeds, the Lady RoadRunners were coming off a 24-point win over the Fillies on their home floor on Saturday night, 87-63.
The loss closes the season for the Fillies for the second straight season in the opening round of the tournament as they finish with a 16-13 record. The Lady RoadRunners advance to the semifinals with a 18-12 record.
Panola did’t concede anything after Mayfield’s bucket, getting the ball upcourt quickly and into the hands of leading scorer Daryna Bachorova.
But her highly-contested jumper from just outside the line bounced off the side of the backboard and the Fillies couldn’t get another shot.
Daryna finished with a game-high 18 points, including four 3-pointers, but the Lady RoadRunners got 15 off the bench from Tyeisha Smith and 14 more, including three 3-pointers, from Britney Thompson.
The game was tied at 33-33 when Bacharova left the game with foul trouble late in the third period.
The Fillies would only make two more free throws in the final two minutes of the third as Angelina took its first lead with 1:04 remaining on a Lovietta Walker 3-pointer, 36-33.
The scoring troubles continued into the fourth as the team wouldn’t score but two more free throws from Destini Whitehead until Bacharova returned three minutes into the period and hit two free throws to make it 42-39 game with 4:34 remaining.
The RoadRunners built the lead up to 46-39, bit Kellymar Ramirez sandwiched two baskets around a Whitehead free throw to make it 46-44 with 1:51 left.
Smith scored to put Angelina up 48-44 with 1:43 left, but Bacharova drilled a 3-pointer to make it 48-47 with 1:20 remaining.
Smith made it 50-47 with 46.9 left and Bacharova drained a 3-pointer from the corner with 34.1 left to tie it at 50-50, setting up the final seconds.
Bacharova also had five rebounds, three assists and a steal, while Whitehead had 10 points, five assists and three steals, while Ramirez had 10 points and eight rebounds.
The Fillies finished the game with 19 turnovers and shot just 33 percent from the field.
