JASPER — The Carthage Bulldogs used a balanced scoring attack while continually playing tight defense on the way to a 67-58 win over the Jasper Bulldogs in a key District 17-4A game on the road Friday night.

The win was the seventh straight for the Dawgs as they improve to 9-1 overall and 6-0 in District 17-4A. They open the second half of district Friday at Center (10-9, 4-2). Jasper falls to 0-11 and 0-4.

Carthage went up 17-9 after one quarter and held a 29-24 advantage at the half.

A 21-12 third-quarter scoring edge improved the lead to 50-36 heading into the fourth. Jasper managed to stay close, but still dropped it despite hitting five 3-pointers in the final eight minutes.

Nick Stewart led the Dawgs with a game-high 20 points, followed by Anthony Riggans with 16, Montrel Hatten with 11, Nate Marry and Zay Woods with eight each and Freddy Lynch and Camden Foster with two each.

Kameron Adams had 16 and Sterling Winchester had 15 to lead Jasper, followed by Drevean Limbrick and Shunmarkus Adams with eight each.


Harris scores 29 in Beckville blowout win over Overton

BECKVILLE — Ryan Harris scored a game-high 29 points and four other teammates were in double figures Friday night as the Beckville Bearcats blew Overton out of the gym, dominating the whole way to a 99-36 win.

The Bearcats are now 8-7 for the season and 5-2 in District 21-2A action. They were scheduled to play Big Sandy at home on Tuesday.

Beckville was on top 26-5 after just one quarter and led 49-18 at the half. The second half was more of the same, outscoring the visitors 25-12 in the third and 25-6 in the fourth quarter.

Other top scorers for the Bearcats were Eli Ramsey with 16, Jaden Mojica and Gage Berry with 14 each, Jaiden Slaughter with 11, Matt Barr with seven and J’Koby Williams with four each.

Shaun Garcia had 18 for Overton.


Bobcats hold on for victory

SHELBYVILLE — The 10th-ranked Gary Bobcats built a lead for the first three periods and then held on for the fourth on the way to a 53-45 win over the Shelbyville Dragons Friday night.

Gary is now 321-2 on the season and 8-1 in district play, while Shelbyville is 14-5 and 4-4. Martinsville is at Gary on Tuesday.

The Bobcats led 12-7 after one quarter and 28-19 at the half and then 40-26 heading into the fourth.



Lady Dawgs fall despite big night

JASPER— JaKyra Roberts had a huge game with a triple double and Alyssa Wallace added a double-double of her own, but it wasn’t enough as the Jasper Lady Bulldogs rallied late for a 62-58 win.

The Lady Dawgs are at Center on Tuesday night and at home Friday night against for senior night.

“It was a close game throughout,” Carthage Head Coach Michael Johnson said. “The game just came down to a couple shots in the end where ours didn’t fall and theirs did. The girls have played hard all season and it is showing down the stretch.”

Carthage led 18-16 after one quarter and it was tied 30-30 at the half.

The Lady Dawgs went back in top after the third 45-44, but the home team came through in the end.

Roberts finished with 18 points, 10 rebounds and 10 steals, while Wallace 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Jakiya Jackson had 10 points, Jada Walton had nine points and Zakyra Myers 7 points 9 rebounds.
