CARTHAGE-Funeral services for Mrs. Julia Verlene Atkerson Smith, 88, of Long Branch, Texas were held at 12:00 p.m. Friday, December 13, 2019 at the Hawthorn Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Leroy Bowley officiating. Burial followed in the County Line Cemetery under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home. Visitation was held from 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m Friday prior to the service.
Mrs. Julia Smith was born September 7, 1931 in Panola County, Texas. She passed this life December 10, 2019 in Long Branch, Texas. Julia was born to the marriage of Jewel and Beatrice Britton Atkerson. She was schooled in Carthage and later graduated with the class of 1949. Mrs. Smith moved to Houston and worked for an insurance agency for many years until her retirement. She continued enjoying her life reading, crocheting and embroidering.
She is preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, R.H. Atkerson and Marvin Atkerson: and two sisters, Janie Ruth Ballwebber and Ovvie Nell Robinson.
Mrs. Smith is survived by her daughter, Brenda Gallegos of Houston; one son, Richard Smith of Long Branch; grandchildren, Brandon Gallegos, Sloane Gallegos, Bryan Smith, James Smith and Patricia Clevenger; sixteen great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
Serving as pallbearers will be Richard Smith, Bryan Smith, James Smith, Brandon Gallegos, Sloane Gallegos, and Aaryn Smith.
