Two men charged in a Carthage shooting that killed Jadarion Hill have been indicted, according to records released by the Panola County District Clerk’s office.

Lonney Charles Williams, 57, and Earington Lamel Westmorland Mumphrey II, 28, both of Carthage, have been indicted for murder.

The men are accused in a Tatum Street shooting that took place Aug. 14 in the Cook’s Quarters neighborhood in Carthage.

Carthage Police Chief Blake Smith said at the time of the men’s arrests that police were able to build a case against both Mumphrey and Williams and have arrest warrants issued. Mumphrey was seen driving on West Panola Street the Monday after the shooting and taken into custody. Williams was seen at the courthouse two days later, Smith said, and police responded and arrested him.

Smith said after Mumphrey’s arrest, search warrants were executed at two homes in Carthage he was living in. Officers found contraband and weapons, Smith said.

School Employee Indicted

The grand jury also returned an indictment against Joseph Aaron Schaetz, 27, of Longview for online solicitation of a minor.

Schaetz was working in Spring Hill ISD shortly before his arrest, but Panola County District Attorney Danny Buck Davidson said the incident in which Schaetz is accused happened in Panola County and that the Panola County Sheriff’s Office handled the investigation.

“The victim is a student in one of the schools in Panola County,” Davidson said at the time. “The investigation is continuing to see if there are other victims.”

Davidson wanted to be clear that adults have a “responsibility to do what is right” when children are involved.

“She was solicited; she was not the solicitor,” he said of the victim. “She did not ask for this.”
