Panola College’s tuition will increase for the 2020-21 school year. The school’s trustees approved the increase at their Monday meeting.

Tuition is being raised $2 per credit hour in-district, $6 out-of-district and $8 for non-residents. That means tuition for one credit hour will be $86 per hour in-district, $149 out-of-district and $190 for non-residents.

In-district students are those living in Panola County. Out-of-district students include students who live within Texas. Non-resident students are students who live out of state or internationally.

President Greg Powell gave trustees a list of eight East Texas colleges and what they charge in-district, out-of-district and non-resident.

“You will see that Panola College has the second lowest tuition and fees among the eight East Texas community colleges,” Powell said. “Only Paris Junior College is less expensive to attend than Panola. I personally don’t consider Paris to be a competitor; those are more Kilgore and Angelina College and Northeast Texas, a little bit closer. But we compare very favorably to the East Texas institutions.”

Powell also discussed the tuition increase with the Student Government Association.

This raise in tuition is a smaller raise than last year, which saw tuition going up $4 for in-district, $7 for out-of-district and $9 for non-residents.

This tuition increase means that for the 2020-21 school year, students taking 15 hours would pay $1,290 in-district, $2,235 out-of-district, and $2,850 for non-residents in tuition.

For the 2019-20 school year, Kilgore College is charging $86 for in-district students, $165 for out-of-district students and $215 for non-resident students for one credit hour. Panola County residents attending Kilgore College would pay the out-of-district rates.

Paris Junior College in Paris is charging $81 in-district, $131 out-of-district and $181 out-of-state and international students for one credit hour this year.

Angelina College in Lufkin charged $88 for in-district, $140 for out-of-district, $185 for out-of-state and $262 for international students for one credit hour as of Fall 2019.

Northeast Texas Community College in Mount Pleasant charges $127 for in-district, $189 for out-of-district and $384 for out-of-state and international students for one credit hour this year.

Tyler Junior College charges $211 for in-district, $271 for out-of-district and $295 for out-of-state students for one credit hour this year.

At all of those schools, Panola residents would pay the out-of-district rate.
