The man accused of killing Panola County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chris Dickerson is seeking release from jail on a personal or reduced bond.
Gregory Newson is charged with capital murder of a peace officer and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He is currently being housed in the Gregg County Jail, with bond set at $1 million.
Newson, through his defense attorney Rick Hagan, filed a writ of habeas corpus seeking release on July 12.
Hagan, in his writ application, argued Newson is indigent and unable to post the $1 million bond that has been set. Hagan also argues that it has been more than 90 days since Newson’s incarceration, “during which time the state as not and could not have been ready for trial.”
“Specifically, an indictment on this charge against Applicant was not returned until September 28, 2020, more than 273 days after his confinement began. Pursuant to Article 17.151 § 1(1), Gregory Dewayne Newson must therefore be released on a personal bond, or by reducing the amount of bail required.”
