A $350,000 state grant will help Carthage improve its sidewalks in the downtown area, City Manager Steve Williams said.

City officials approved a contract with Traylor & Associates at their Monday meeting to manage the Texas Capital Fund Main Street sidewalk improvement grant as it is executed.

The grant is part of a state program available to cities designed as official Texas Historical Commission Main Street Cities to beautify and improve downtown areas.

Improvements must be made to public property within the city’s designated downtown district. Williams said the city had a $75,000 match requirement.

Much of the planned improvements will be on East Panola and East Sabine streets, Williams said. The city plans to get bids on the project at a later date.
