Gary Elementary will be a Leader in Me School at the beginning of next school year, the school has announced. Leader in Me is a whole-school improvement process based on the idea that everyone can be a leader.
This evidence-based approach empowers students with the leadership and life skills they need to thrive in the 21st century. The focus is on developing the whole-child by teaching leadership to every student, creating a culture of student empowerment and aligning systems to drive results in academics.
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is one of the key frameworks of the Leader in Me process. Gary Elementary students will begin to learn and apply leadership skills embedded in the 7 Habits starting the 2021-2022 school year. Along with the change in language, the school has begun to shift to a heavier emphasis on student ownership and accountability with leadership roles throughout the school whenever possible.
Gary Elementary students have already begun this transformation process as demonstrated by the photographs below showing students ranging from first to sixth grade hosting and facilitating the End of School Year Awards Ceremony on May 20.
Numerous stakeholders are positive about the beginning changes for the Gary Elementary students. Brittney Hicks, a parent of a third-grade student in Gary expressed the thoughts of many parents and teachers when she said, “I’m so excited to see how this program changes the lives of our children.”
Principal Brittney Davis states that this is beyond a mere program.
“It’s one thing to pursue academic excellence as that is the goal of most schools,” Davis said. “What we are excited to offer is the chance to become powerful leaders. In today’s world, that’s what we need — leadership. We need students that seek to become leaders and grow beyond the mere academic fields of life. We want to elicit change in our world, and this is how we begin.”
Gary ISD is currently taking student registrations for those interested in being a member of their leadership community and commitment to whole-person growth. Pick up registration packets at any of the offices.
