Students from Beckville and Carthage have received awards at the district level for the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ Patriot’s Pen and Voice of Democracy essay contests.

Will Boggs from Beckville Junior High School won second place in the Patriot’s Pen contest for middle school students in District 19. Mary Katherine Smith from Carthage High School won third place in the Voice of Democracy contest for high school students in District 19.

Smith said she was thankful for the opportunity give to her in the contest and the help the winnings gave to her scholarship fund.

“Each year it’s just exciting to be a part of this essay contest and everything it does,” she said. “And also it makes you think, the topic makes you think about your country and it makes you really think about what you’re thankful for and gives you a little insight and information.”

In addition, Russell Rowe, a teacher at Carthage High School, was picked as the High School Teacher of Year in District 19.

“I’m very pleased,” Rowe said. “It’s wonderful actually teaching high school students the value of American democracy and what America truly means, and it’s great to be recognized for teaching that as well.”
