The sixth annual Picnic in the Park took place at Davis Park Wednesday to celebrate National Nursing Home Week.

Residents from Panola Nursing Home, HeartsWay Hospice, Carthage Healthcare, Winkler Place and Briarcliff Nursing Center — alongside tenants at Panola Senior Apartments — gathered in the park for a picnic with music by the Pitts Singers and hot dogs prepared by Randy Liedtke of the Carthage Fire Department.

“It’s good for them to get out of the facility,” Kim Henigan of HeartsWay Hospice said. “They enjoy the sunshine and the fellowship and also the food.”

Janet Ritter with Texas Home Health mentioned the importance of the picnic.

“A lot of them never get to leave the facility, so it really is a big deal for them,” Ritter said. “And then as far as us, it’s just a way for us to give back to the facilities.”

Donors who helped provide materials for the picnic included Panola Processing, HEB, Walmart, Brookshire Brothers, St. Andrew’s Methodist Church and the Popcorn Place.
