In 2016 Potlatch featured a children's area with a variety of activities, some of which will return for the event this year. The event is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The final touches are being put in place a week before the annual Potlatch event.

Potlatch, a festival filled with shopping, food, children's area, teen area, entertainment and a car show made a successful return to Carthage last year after a 24 year hiatus. The event took the place of the Oil and Gas Blast, said Carthage Main Street Manger Cindy Deloney.

Patrons will be able to enjoy a variety of performances this year on two stages, Deloney said. On the main stage, which will be inside the Carthage Civic Center, there will be performances by the Bulldog Belles at 10 a.m., Super Group at 10:30 a.m., Mike Parker and Bill Smith at 11 a.m., the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame singers and special guests at noon and the Jalapeno Tree Karaoke Contest at 1 p.m.

The karaoke contest will feature a $1,000 prize, Deloney said. The applications for the karaoke contest are available on the City of Carthage's website, www.carthagetexas.us , under the Potlatch link or at the Panola County Chamber of Commerce.

In the teen area, which will be in the Panola County Expo Hall, the Carthage Jr. High Auxiliary will perform at 10:30 a.m. The lip sync contest will begin in at 11 a.m. There will also be an assortment of games in the teen area, including as the pillow fight, Jacob's Ladder, soccer billiards, a rock climbing wall and a new bumper ball game. Deloney said patrons won't want to miss the bumper ball game.

There will also be a children's area, which will feature a trackless train, which is always popular with the kids, Deloney said. The area will also have a bungee run, monster slide, obstacle course and jump house.

Deloney said there will also be a car show again this year. The 15th Annual Potlatch Car Show and Swap Meet, which is formerly the Oil and Gas Blast, will be in memory of Keith McIlwain and Jerry Buechler. The registration will be from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.. The car show will be from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be awards in 16 classes, plus the best of show. The entry cost is $10 per car. For more information contact 903-690-1401 or get the entry form on the City of Carthage website, www.carthagetexas.us.

As for food, Deloney said there will be baked potatoes, nachos, tacos, corn dogs, meat pies, funnel cakes, chicken strips, burgers, brisket sandwiches, fried pickles, pies, alligator hoagies, popcorn, shaved ice, turkey legs, cotton candy, fried pies and more.

However, one noticeable change to the festival this year is that the Carthage Main Street Halloween Costume Contest will not be held at Potlatch, Deloney said. Instead, it will be held on Saturday, Oct. 21 in Anderson Park on the square in downtown Carthage. The registration will begin at 10 a.m. in the gazebo and the judging will begin at 11 a.m. on the stage in the park. There will be cash prizes and trophies in the following categories: Scariest, Funniest, Most Original, Cutest and Judges Choice. All ages are invited to participate.

Potlatch will be Saturday, Oct. 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Carthage Civic Center, Panola County
