Goodwin repeats as district Coach of the Year, other Dogs honored

Dillon Morris enjoyed a productive season that culminated in a First-Team All-District selection.

Carthage is well represented on the 2017 4A Region II, District 16 all-star baseball team. The Bulldogs posted a final record of 19-12 on their way to a postseason tournament berth that ended last weekend with a series loss to Gilmer.

Head coach John Goodwin continued his success after taking over the position last spring. Goodwin was selected as Coach of the Year. Other superlatives included seniors Kason Davis and Kolbey Sharpe as Offensive Most Valuable Player and Defensive Most Valuable Player selections, respectively.

In 30 games played, Davis, who recently signed with Tyler Junior College as a middle infielder. An all-around athlete who quarterbacked the Dogs to the state 4A football title last fall, he hit .379 this season with a team-leading 33 hits and 28 runs batted in. Davis scored 26 runs while striking out 10 times in 87 at-bats.

On defense, Sharpe committed only five errors in 82 total chances for a fielding percentage of .939.

Junior Callahan Baldree was the district's Newcomer of the Year after hitting .313 with an on base percentage of .442. As a pitcher, Baldree finished the year with a 5-1 record, a .237 earned run average and was second on the team in strikeouts with 45. He logged a fielding percentage of .889 with 32 put-outs and four errors.

Senior Dillon Morris was the staff ace for the Carthage staff, leading the rotation with 53.2 innings pitched and was 6-2 on the mound which resulted in a First-Team selection. He struck out 60 batters, walked 29 and compiled an earned run average of 1.17.

Senior third baseman Seth Ballenger made the First-Team after compiling a batting average of .309 and was second on the team with 22 strikeouts in 31 games played. Ballenger also pitched and finished with seven saves in seven chances as the staff's closer with 29 strikeouts in 20 innings.

Junior Kelan Foster was a First-Team choice as the all-star first baseman after compiling a fielding percentage of .867.

Carthage Second-Team selections included sophomore pitcher Seth Smith and senior outfielder Brewster Griffith.

Included as Honorable Mention from the Bulldog roster were sophomores Baylor Colle and Gunner Capps.
