One week is in the books for Elysian Fields' volleyball team under the direction of new head coach Macy Cherry, who said she's proud of what she has seen so far.
"It's good," she said. "Everybody is trying their hardest and doing really well, doing everything I ask. It's going really well. They want to win and it's apparent. We're just trying to get all the kinks out right now."
Cherry said her team has responded well to her as the new coach.
"They're all super respectful, super competitive and it seems like we mesh well," she added.
Friday saw the Lady Jackets play host to Jefferson, Center and Timpson in a play day to cap off the first week of practice.
They are slated to go to Waskom today for another play day before playing host to West Rusk Tuesday. That day's action is set to begin with the freshmen team at 4:30 p.m. and will be immediately followed by the JV and the varsity. Then Thursday through Saturday they will take part in a tournament in Gary.
As for Cherry, she's no stranger to the area as she grew up in East Texas. She graduated from Carthage in 2012, and was 1st team all district in volleyball.
"I just graduated in May from Texas State but I'm originally from Carthage," she said. "It was honestly perfect because I can live at home for a couple years and drive here."
