The Panola County Retired School Employees Association met on Nov. 7 at the Sammy Brown Library. President John C. Ray presented an interesting program about the history of patent medications.
Lydia Pinkham’s Vegetable Compound, Haldacol and Coca Cola were among these popular early potions used to heal common ailments. Ray also discussed traveling medicine shows and “snake oil” salesmen, and he brought along several examples of these cure-alls.
The group voted to contribute to the Champions’ Closet at Carthage High School and to the Feed the Need Closet at Panola College. A children’s book project is also underway. Next month the group will enjoy a Christmas dinner in the Murphy-Payne Room at Panola College.
All former school employees are encouraged to join PCRSEA. Call John C. Ray at (903) 693-3340 for more information.
