The annual Take A Kid Fishing event provides free fishing poles to young children.

A free event Saturday at Lake Murvaul aims to get children and young teens fishing.

The Take A Kid Fishing event will give away free fishing poles to those 16 and younger beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday at Lake Murvaul as the Panola County Fresh Water Supply District No. 1 hosts a day of fun.

A free hot dog lunch is planned around 11:30 a.m., with children getting the opportunity to win raffles. Adult raffle tickets are available for $1 each.

“This year we have a few things that we’ve been working on,” Kayla Gray, with the water district, said.

In addition to Smokey the Bear, this year’s Take A Kid Fishing event will also include H-E-B Buddy and Paw Patrol’s Chase and Skye

Gray says the water district works on the event year-round, and they’re always in need of donations to keep it going and ensure that no child leaves without a fishing pole.

“Just to give you kind of an idea: The fishing poles alone cost about $5,000,” Gray said. “We buy those from Wings & Whitetails. Right now we’ve only received $2,000 in donations. We are still needing donations for the hot dogs, food, etc.”Marina Open

Gray also mentioned that the Lake Murvaul Marina is open, with extra help planned for the summer. A new bait house means they’ll be offering even more minnows, worms and maybe crickets.

Hours are 4 to 9 p.m. on Thursday; 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday; and 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
