The Panola County Sheriff’s Department Honor Guard performed the Presentation of Colors at the American Legion Veterans Day program in 2018.

Several Panola County government offices and schools will be closed Monday in observance of the Veterans Day holiday.

What’s Closed?

The Panola County courthouse, Beckville City Hall and Gary City Hall will be closed Monday. Carthage ISD students do not have classes, but it is a staff development day.

The Sammy Brown Library will be closed Saturday and Monday for the holiday.

Carthage City Hall will be open on Monday, as will Panola College, Gary ISD and Beckville ISD. The Panola Watchman office will also be open Monday.

U.S. Post Offices will be closed.

Upcoming Events

Several Veterans Day events are planned this week:

  • Gary ISD Veterans, 9 a.m., Nov. 11, Elementary Cafeteria, 132 Bobcat Trail in Gary. Students honor veterans for their service. The public is invited.
  • Veterans Memorial Wall Dedication, 11 a.m., Nov. 11, Panola County Veterans Memorial Wall, North Shelby Street by the Old Jail Library and Museum in downtown Carthage. A grand opening and dedication for the repaired Panola County Veterans Memorial Wall is planned. Officials will also celebrate the opening of a new military museum.
  • Veterans Day Celebration, 10 a.m., Nov. 12, Carthage Healthcare Center, 701 S. Market St. in Carthage. Texas Home Health Hospice and Carthage Healthcare host a Veterans Day ceremony, with a performance from Panola College students and patriotic magic tricks. Everyone is invited.
  • Honor Our Veterans Festival & Fireworks Show, 2 p.m., Nov. 16, Still Waters Cowboy Church, 1699 Texas 315 in Carthage. The church hosts a festival and fireworks show to honor veterans. There will be a drawing for an AR-10 6.5 Creedmoor, as well as games and a bounce house for children. A chili cook-off has a $25 entry fee, and the winner will take all of the entry fees.
