A DeBerry shooting has left one dead and one injured, the Panola County Sheriff’s Office said.
Tramaine Eugene Butler, 20, of DeBerry was arrested Thursday by Panola County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Investigator Sergeant Jeff Ivy and charged in connection with the death of Keileon Johnson, 22, of Waskom.
The Panola County Sheriff’s Office received multiple 911 calls around 5 p.m. Thursday reporting a shooting on County Road 3151 in DeBerry, officials said. One caller said that at least one person was shot during an argument, and the shooter was still on the scene with what appeared to be a rifle, officials said. As deputies were on their way to the scene, they received further information that the victim was being taken to the hospital in a private vehicle, offiicials said.
As the driver of the vehicle left with the scene, they saw an Inter-Community firefighter vehicle on U.S. 79 responding to the scene and flagged it down, officials said, and the firefighter discovered two shooting victims, one of whom had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and the other who had gotten one gunshot to the hand.
Firefighters conducted life-saving measures on the more seriously injured victim, identified as Keileon Johnson, officials said. Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene by Panola County Justice of the Peace Toni Hughes, while the victim with the hand wound was transported to the hospital by EMS, officials said.
Meanwhile, deputies and investigators arrived at the scene, where they met with Butler and later placed him in custody for the shooting, officials said.
Johnson’s body was transported to Dallas for an autopsy, officials said.
Panola County investigators are in contact with District Attorney Danny Buck Davidson as the proceed with the investigation, officials said.
